23 maggio 1992 [3] . Stava tornando, come era solito fare nei fine settimana, da Roma. Il jet di servizio partito dall'aeroporto di Ciampino intorno alle 16:45 arriva a Punta Raisi dopo un viaggio di 53 minuti. Lo attendono tre autovetture del tipo
Fiat Croma , gruppo di scorta sotto comando del capo della squadra mobile della Polizia di Stato,
Arnaldo La Barbera .
Appena sceso dall'aereo, Falcone si sistema alla guida della vettura bianca, ed accanto prende posto la moglie

Giuseppe Costanza occupa il sedile posteriore. Nella Croma marrone, c'è alla guida
Vito Schifani , con accanto l'agente scelto

Rocco Di Cillo , mentre nella vettura azzurra ci sono Paolo Capuzzo, Gaspare Cervello e Angelo Corbo. Al gruppo è in testa la Croma marrone, poi la Croma bianca guidata da Falcone, e in coda la Croma azzurra.
Le auto lasciano l'aeroporto imboccando l'autostrada in direzione Palermo. La situazione appare tranquilla, tanto che non vengono attivate neppure le sirene. Ma qualcuno, nell'ombra, ha già tramato. Giovanni Brusca , il sicario incaricato da
